Semaphorin 3 a restores the ability of type 1 regulatory T cells to suppress food allergy.

Abstract
Food allergy (FA) is a common immune disorder that involves dysfunctional immune regulation. More remedies for restoring immune regulation are necessary. Semaphorin 3 A (Sema3a) is a secreted protein of the semaphorin family, which plays a role in immune responses at all stages. The objective of this study is to gain an understanding of how Sema3a can restore the immune regulatory abilities of type 1 regulatory T cells (Tr1 cells). In this study, blood samples were taken from patients with FA. Tr1 cells were purified from blood samples using flow cytometry cell sorting, using LAG3 and CD49b as surface markers. RNA sequencing was employed to examine the characteristics of Tr1 cells. We observed an exaggerated increase in ER stress in peripheral Tr1 cells of FA patients. Enforced expression of spliced X-box protein-1 (XBP1s, one of the key molecules in ER stress) resulted in suppression of interleukin (IL)-10 expression in CD4+ T cells. Eukaryotic initiation factor 2a (eIF2a) mediated the effects of XBP1 on suppressing IL-10 expression in Tr1 cells. The use of Sema3a resulted in a decrease in ER stress, and an increase in IL-10 expression in Tr1 cells of FA patients. Sema3a administration reduced experimental FA by increasing the number of Tr1 cells. In conclusion, IL-10 expression in Tr1 cells is disturbed by ER stress. Sema3a treatment restores the expression of IL-10 and the immunosuppressive capability of Tr1 cells.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) vary in shape and surface characteristics in the environment. The attachment of MPs to surfaces can be studied using the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory. However, this theory does not account for the shape MPs. Therefore, we investigated the attachment of spherical, pear-shaped, and peanut-shaped polystyrene MPs to quartz sand in NaCl and CaCl2 solutions using batch tests. The attachment of MPs to quartz sand was quantified using the attachment efficiency (alpha). Subsequently, alpha behaviors were interpreted using energy barriers (EBs) and interaction minima obtained from extended DLVO calculations, which were performed using an equivalent sphere model (ESM) and a newly developed equivalent Cassini model (ECM) to account for the shape of the MPs. The ESM failed to interpret the alpha behavior of the three MP shapes because it predicted high EBs and shallow minima. The alpha values for spherical MPs (0.62-1.00 in NaCl and 0.48-0.96 in CaCl2) were higher than those for pear- and peanut-shaped MPs (0.01-0.63 in NaCl and 0.02-0.46 in CaCl2, and 0.01-0.59 in NaCl and 0.02-0.40 in CaCl2, respectively). Conversely, the ECM could interpret the alpha behavior of pear- and peanut-shaped MPs either by changes in EBs or interaction minima as a function of orientation angles and electrolyte ionic strength. Therefore, the particle shape must be considered to improve the attachment analyses.

Important soil microbiota's effects on plants and soils: a comprehensive 30-year systematic literature review.

Abstract
Clarifying the relationship between soil microorganisms and the plant-soil system is crucial for encouraging the sustainable development of ecosystems, as soil microorganisms serve a variety of functional roles in the plant-soil system. In this work, the influence mechanisms of significant soil microbial groups on the plant-soil system and their applications in environmental remediation over the previous 30 years were reviewed using a systematic literature review (SLR) methodology. The findings demonstrated that: (1) There has been a general upward trend in the number of publications on significant microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and archaea. (2) Bacteria and fungi influence soil development and plant growth through organic matter decomposition, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium element dissolution, symbiotic relationships, plant growth hormone production, pathogen inhibition, and plant resistance induction. Archaea aid in the growth of plants by breaking down low-molecular-weight organic matter, participating in element cycles, producing plant growth hormones, and suppressing infections. (3) Microorganism principles are utilized in soil remediation, biofertilizer production, denitrification, and phosphorus removal, effectively reducing environmental pollution, preventing soil pathogen invasion, protecting vegetation health, and promoting plant growth. The three important microbial groups collectively regulate the plant-soil ecosystem and help maintain its relative stability. This work systematically summarizes the principles of important microbial groups influence plant-soil systems, providing a theoretical reference for how to control soil microbes in order to restore damaged ecosystems and enhance ecosystem resilience in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Halitosis, the unpleasant odor in the oral cavity, has garnered increased attention and concern due to the growing significance of social interaction. SGE-107, a blend of 3 botanical drugs-Korean goat's beard, Cirsium tanakae, and Basil-with caffeic acid as its indicator component. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of SGE-107 in treating halitosis in patients with mild gastrointestinal symptoms. METHODS We enrolled 25 participants with oral malodor and dyspeptic symptoms. We assessed the severity of halitosis using the visual analog scale. Throughout a 4-week period of administering SGE-107, we evaluated both objective and subjective parameters, including the halitosis-associated life-quality test, the Korean gastrointestinal symptom rating scale, levels of volatile sulfur compounds, salivary flow rate, oral moisture, tongue index, Winkel tongue coating index, and tongue temperature. RESULTS After the intervention period, both the visual analog scale (5.88 ± 1.03 vs 2.38 ± 0.93, P < .001) and the scores of the halitosis-associated life-quality test (31.21 ± 11.78 vs 13.83 ± 6.38, P < .001) showed significant reductions. The proportion of participants with abnormal levels of methyl mercaptan (a volatile sulfur compound) also significantly decreased (17, 70.8% vs 9, 37.5%, P = .039). Furthermore, there were significant improvements in reflux, constipation, diarrhea, and the total scores on the Korean gastrointestinal symptom rating scale. Throughout the study period, only 2 participants experienced mild adverse events. CONCLUSION SGE-107 appears to be a safe and effective treatment for halitosis-associated with gastrointestinal symptoms; nevertheless, the limited sample size necessitates further large-scale randomized, controlled studies to confirm our findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a type of cardiovascular disease (CVD) caused by coronary atherosclerosis. It is a main cause of medical burden and cardiovascular related death. Zhishi Xiebai Guizhi Decoction (ZXGD) is a representative prescription of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in the treatment of CHD, but there is poor systemically evidence-based appraisal. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ZXGD for CHD. METHODS Eight databases were retrieved for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Data was extracted independently by 2 reviewers. The quality of the included studies was assessed by Cochrane Collaboration risk of bias tool. Clinical efficacy, blood lipid, vascular endothelial function, inflammatory factor and homocysteine (Hcy) were prespecified outcome measures. RESULTS Twenty-four studies (2272 patients) were included. Meta-analysis showed that compared with conventional western medicine (WM) alone, ZXGD was associated with a greater symptom improvement rate with a relative risk (RR) of 1.21 [95% CI (1.16, 1.26), P < .00001] and a greater electrocardiogram (ECG) improvement rate with a RR of 1.27 [95% CI (1.16, 1.40), P < .00001]. In terms of blood lipid, ZXGD reduced total cholesterol (TC) with a mean difference (MD) of -1.15 [95%CI (-1.75, -0.55), P = .0002] and triglyceride (TG) [MD = -0.72, 95%CI (-0.99, -0.45), P < .00001], reduced low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) [MD = -0.93, 95% CI (-1.17, -0.69), P < .00001], and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) [MD = 0.31, 95%CI (0.20, 0.42), P < .00001]. In terms of vascular endothelial function, ZXGD decreased the level of endothelin-1 (ET-1) [MD = -7.81, 95%CI (-9.51, -6.10), P < .00001], and increased nitric oxide (NO) [MD = 8.90, 95%CI (7.86, 9.93), P < .00001]. ZXGD also reduced high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) [MD = -1.73, 95% CI (-2.63, -0.83), P < .00001] and Hcy [MD = -2.03, 95%CI (-2.78, -1.28), P < .00001]. No significant differences were found in adverse event rate between the 2 groups with a RR of 0.77 [95% CI (0.44, 1.34), P = .36]. CONCLUSION ZXGD is effective and safe in the treatment of CHD. However, more rigorous and high-quality RCTs are needed to verify the conclusion.

Dietary Isoflavone Intake and Breast Cancer Prognosis: A Prospective Analysis and Meta-Analysis.

Abstract
We aimed to examine the association between dietary isoflavone intake and the risk of breast cancer recurrence and summarize evidence on the role of dietary isoflavone intake in breast cancer prognosis. This prospective study included 592 breast cancer survivors who completed a dietary assessment. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using Cox proportional hazards models. Of the studies published until May 31, 2023, that were searched in PUBMED and EMBASE databases, 14 studies were selected. Adjusted HRs were combined using fixed- or random-effects models. During the median follow-up of 4.3 years, 47 recurrences were identified. The HR (95% CI) for recurrence comparing the highest versus the lowest tertile of isoflavones intake was 1.29 (0.60-2.78). In a meta-analysis of previously published data and ours, dietary isoflavone intake was associated with a better breast cancer prognosis. The combined HRs (95% CIs) comparing the extreme categories were 0.81 (0.67-0.98) for recurrence and 0.85 (0.76-0.96) for all-cause mortality. A nonlinear inverse association was observed between isoflavone intake and the risk of recurrence and all-cause mortality. Our study suggests that dietary isoflavone intake is associated with a favorable prognosis in breast cancer survivors and warrants further investigation.

The effects of dietary self-monitoring intervention on anthropometric and metabolic changes via a mobile application or paper-based diary: a randomized trial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Weight loss via a mobile application (App) or a paper-based diary (Paper) may confer favorable metabolic and anthropometric changes. SUBJECTS/METHODS A randomized parallel trial was conducted among 57 adults whose body mass indices (BMIs) were 25 kg/m2 or greater. Participants randomly assigned to either the App group (n = 30) or the Paper group (n = 27) were advised to record their foods and supplements through App or Paper during the 12-week intervention period. Relative changes of anthropometries and biomarker levels were compared between the 2 intervention groups. Untargeted metabolic profiling was identified to discriminate metabolic profiles. RESULTS Out of the 57 participants, 54 participants completed the trial. Changes in body weight and BMI were not significantly different between the 2 groups (P = 0.11). However, body fat and low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol levels increased in the App group but decreased in the Paper group, and the difference was statistically significant (P = 0.03 for body fat and 0.02 for LDL-cholesterol). In the metabolomics analysis, decreases in methylglyoxal and (S)-malate in pyruvate metabolism and phosphatidylcholine (lecithin) in linoleic acid metabolism from pre- to post-intervention were observed in the Paper group. CONCLUSIONS In the 12-week randomized parallel trial of weight loss through a App or a Paper, we found no significant difference in change in BMI or weight between the App and Paper groups, but improvement in body fatness and LDL-cholesterol levels only in the Paper group under the circumstances with minimal contact by dietitians or health care providers. Extra- and intranuclear heat perception and triggering mechanisms in plants.

Abstract
The escalating impact of global warming on crop yield and quality poses a significant threat to future food supplies. Breeding heat-resistant crop varieties holds promise, but necessitates a deeper understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying plant heat tolerance. Recent studies have shed light on the initial events of heat perception in plants. In this review, we provide a comprehensive summary of the recent progress made in unraveling the mechanisms of heat perception and response in plants. Calcium ion (Ca2+), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and nitric oxide (NO) have emerged as key participants in heat perception. Furthermore, we discuss the potential roles of the NAC transcription factor NTL3, thermo-tolerance 3.1 (TT3.1), and Target of temperature 3 (TOT3) as thermosensors associated with the plasma membrane. Additionally, we explore the involvement of cytoplasmic HISTONE DEACETYLASE 9 (HDA9), mRNA encoding the phytochrome-interacting factor 7 (PIF7), and chloroplasts in mediating heat perception. This review also highlights the role of intranuclear transcriptional condensates formed by phytochrome B (phyB), EARLY FLOWERING 3 (ELF3), and guanylate-binding protein (GBP)-like GTPase 3 (GBPL3) in heat perception. Finally, we raise the unresolved questions in the field of heat perception that require further investigation in the future.

Prevalence and risk factors of frailty in older patients with chronic heart failure: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Abstract
AIM: To provide a summary of the available evidence concerning prevalence and risk factors of frailty in elderly patients with CHF. METHODS PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL, The Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database (CNKI), Chinese Biomedical Database (Sinomed), Weipu Database (VIP), and Wanfang database were searched from inception to July 2023. This study strictly followed the PRISMA guidelines. The quality of the included studies was rated by the Agency for Healthcare and Research and Quality and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. RESULTS A total of 21 original studies were included, involving 4,797 patients. Meta-analysis results showed that the prevalence of frailty in older patients with heart failure was 38% (95%CI: 0.32-0.44). Age, cardiac function grading, left atrial diameter, left ventricular ejection fraction, hemoglobin, polypharmacy, BNP, nutritional risk, and hospitalization day are the influential factors of frailty in older patients with CHF. CONCLUSION The prevalence of frailty in older patients with CHF is high, and clinical medical personnel should identify and intervene early to reduce or delay the frailty in older patients with CHF as much as possible.

Comprehensive analysis of bZIP transcription factors in passion fruit.

Abstract
The bZIP transcription factors are well-known transcriptional regulators that are essential for regulating resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses in plants. In this study, a total of 56 putative bZIP members were identified in passion fruit (Passiflora edulis). An integrative analysis was performed using bioinformatics. Transcriptome analysis revealed that most PebZIPs respond to drought, salt, cold and heat stress. By combining the transcriptome results of two different resistant genotypes, four representative members were finally selected for differential expression validation in different tissues and cultivars. Furthermore, transcriptome and metabolome association analysis revealed consistent expression trends of PeZIP20 and PeZIP21, with only one difference at 63aa, with different metabolites including flavonoids, lipids and amino acids. This work will contribute to further studies of the functions of bZIPs and their resistance properties, as well as to the development of novel germplasm.
